What's Happening - EE Cruz Employees From September 11 Clean Up Effort Begin Construction On The WTC Memorial
On the morning of September 11, 2001, EE Cruz and Company was working for Turner Construction in Jersey City NJ, directly across the Hudson River from the World Trade Center. EE Cruz forces were on site that fateful morning, constructing the foundation for the 30 Hudson Street Project for Goldman Sachs, the tallest building in the State. Many workers just happened to be looking across at the New York skyline at the moment the first attack took place.
Having enjoyed an excellent relationship with The Port Authority over the years, EE Cruz company executives began to ready supplies, manpower and equipment to help the cause. A triage center was established on the Jersey City side of the river with Company vehicles stationed and ready to assist in transporting the injured to local hospitals. Rui Andre, EE Cruz's Equipment Manager and Mark Carlucci, a Local 15 Mechanic and longtime employee, were among the first to arrive at Ground Zero. They both helped by forming a chain with other EE Cruz workmen, passing 5 gallon pails filled with debris that had been removed by hand from the massive pile of rubble.
Later that day under the direction of Bovis, with the help of the Port Authority Police, EE Cruz quickly mobilized a flatbed truck with oxygen, acetylene, and torches together with 15 to 20 carts. Once the company's willingness to assist and rapid response became evident, officials requested more help in the form of equipment. Six off road dump trucks, a 245 backhoe with a grapple attachment, and a 980 loader were removed from other jobsites to assist in the clean up. Two tractor trailers followed and worked to remove steel beams and other items.
The Company remained on site for several months, assisting the various Construction Managers and Agencies at Ground Zero. Joseph F. Malandro, Vice President of EE Cruz and Co, served on a special slurry wall committe organized by George Tamaro of Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers in an effort to save the existing slurry wall on site. Our Company and our employees are proud of our contribution and look forward to finishing the job with Bovis by building our most noteworthy foundation to date--the foundation for the World Trade Center Memorial.
