Type of Work: Transportation
Location: New York City, New York

Owner: The Port Authority of NY & NJ
Project Manager: Jack Tobin

EE Cruz is in a joint venture partnership with Nicholson Construction Co., a geotechnical specialties firm from Cuddy, PA.  The JV is subcontracting to Phoenix Constructors to complete two separate projects involving the World Trade Center Transportation Hub.

The first project involves Line Underpinning Micropiles.  Using a specialized drill that sits on the roof of the tunnel, we are installing 459 10 3/4" diameter steel pipe piles through the existing No. 1 subway tunnel.  The piles will then be driven 60'-80' deep to rock and connected to a framework of temporary support beams to suspend the subway, making it possible to excavate the soil underneath.

This project requires that the team work 55 hours straight through the weekends from Friday at midnight to Monday at 5am, when the NYC Transit has a suspended schedule and trains are not running.  The tracks must be completely clear so that the team can cut off the micropiles to final elevation (track level) and install any piles that cannot be installed from the roof of the tunnel.  There are approximately 20 tradespeople on the job, including equipment operators, dockbuilders, and laborers.

The contract for this job is $17.5 million.  The NCC/EEC Joint Venture was given notice to proceed on October 11, 2006.

The second project invloves reinforcing the East Bathtub Slurry Wall along Church Street.  We are installing 923 tieback anchors through an existing basement wall while new slurry walls are being constructed  at the site.  The tieback anchors will laterally support these walls when excavation begins on the three new office towers at the east end of the site.

Work has begun involving chopping recesses into the existing concrete basement wall to ready it for tieback drilling and anchor installation.  A total of five levels of tiebacks will be installed in coordination with the completion of the new slurry walls as excavation proceeds.

The contract for this job is $19.5 million.  The NCC/EEC Joint Venture was given notice to proceed on October 11, 2006.
